米国イリノイ大学計算機学科博士課程修了。Ph.D. in Computer Science。日本電信電話公社（現NTT）電気通信研究所データ通信方式研究室長、早稲田大学理工学術院教授、同大学副総長、日本学術会議会員、情報処理学会副会長などを歴任。現在、早稲田大学名誉教授。
